Serving at the End

The **cable** had been fraying for months, and so had they.

Elena adjusted her grip on the **padel** racket, watching Marcus stretch his hamstrings on the other side of the court. His **hair** was thinner now, the salt barely outnumbering the pepper. They'd been playing every Thursday for seven years, ever since he'd recruited her into what she'd later realize was a glorified **pyramid** scheme masquerading as a wellness startup.

"You're not going to believe it," Marcus said, bouncing the ball. "Jennifer finally left her husband."

Elena hesitated. Jennifer — the woman Marcus had been sleeping with for three years, the woman whose name Elena had stopped mentioning at dinner parties with his wife. "Oh?"

"Yeah. She's moving in next week."

The ball hit the fence behind her. Elena hadn't even swung.

"Marcus," she said, and her voice sounded foreign to her own ears. "I know."

The silence between them stretched, heavy and suffocating. "You know?"

"I've known since year two. I'm your oldest **friend**, not an idiot."

He looked stricken, guilty, terrified — and she realized she didn't care. The betrayal had calcified into something dull and ordinary years ago. She kept showing up because their children were friends, because their husbands golfed together, because she'd built her entire social architecture around a person who'd been lying to her for half a decade.

"Why didn't you —"

"Because I was waiting for you to tell me. Because I thought maybe you would. Because I was a coward." She walked to the net, placed her racket on her side. "But this? This isn't a friendship. It's a hostage situation with monthly dinners."

"Elena, please —"

"I'm done being part of your pyramid, Marcus. I'm done pretending." She picked up her bag, her keys, the fraying cable of her own complicity. "Find someone else for next Thursday."

She walked away without looking back. The ball remained motionless in the center of the court, exactly where neither of them had left it.
