Service Break
The papaya sat on the kitchen counter, its skin mottled with yellow and green like a bruise that wouldn't heal. Elena had bought it at the specialty market on Tuesday, back when she still believed in the power of small gestures. Now it was Friday, and the fruit had ripened into something dangerously sweet, the kind of sugar that rots from the inside.
Her iPhone lit up again. Another notification from the padel club — a reminder about the mixed doubles tournament she and Marcus had signed up for months ago. Back when they still did things together. Back when "mixed doubles" didn't feel like a metaphor for their entire marriage.
Elena sliced into the papaya. The flesh gave way too easily, soft and yielding, perfuming the air with the scent of tropical desperation. She wondered how long she'd been pretending not to notice the late-night padel practices, the WhatsApp messages deleted before she could see them, the sudden interest in fitness that had nothing to do with health and everything to do with someone named Sofia who coached beginners on Tuesday evenings.
The phone buzzed again. Marcus: *Running late. Coach wants to work on my backhand.*
Elena's backhand had never been better. She'd been taking lessons too — with Sofia's husband, a quiet man who taught her that the most devastating shots came from the baseline, patient and precise. She'd meant to tell Marcus. She'd meant to do a lot of things.
She scooped the papaya seeds into the trash, black and slippery as secrets. Let him come home to an empty kitchen. Let him find his iPhone charger missing. Let him explain why his padel bag smelled like perfume that wasn't hers.
The match was tomorrow. She'd be there. She'd even bring the papaya, cut into perfect cubes, arranged on a platter like an offering. They'd play mixed doubles, all four of them, sweat on the court, polite conversation over drinks afterward. The game would continue. Love, forty. Game. Match.
Elena ate a piece of papaya. It was overripe now, fermented at the edges. Sweet, but with something wrong underneath. Just like everything else.
