Maya's hair wasn't cooperating. Again. She'd spent twenty minutes trying to tame the frizzy catastrophe, but it was having none of it. Third period gym class was going to be a nightmare.

"You going to the social?" Chloe asked, sliding onto the bench beside her. Maya nodded, pulling her iPhone from her pocket to check the time. "Yeah, but I'm nervous about the whole padel thing. I've never played."

"It's fine," Chloe said. "Javier's going to be there."

That was the problem. Javier, with his perfect smile and effortless athletic ability. Maya had spent weeks trying to get his attention, mostly through careful Instagram story positioning and strategically timed reactions.

"Did you take your vitamin?" Chloe asked suddenly.

"What?"

"Your mom texted me. She's worried you're not eating enough with all the tennis practice."

Maya rolled her eyes but dug the gummy vitamin from her backpack. Because apparently she needed her best friend's mom monitoring her nutrient intake through proxy. The gummy was shaped like a bear and tasted like artificial strawberry.

The social arrived faster than Maya wanted. She stationed herself near the snack table, iPhone clutched like a security blanket, watching groups form and dissolve around the padel courts. The glass walls reflected the sunset-orange sky, and inside, people laughed and moved with confidence Maya didn't feel.

Then she saw Javier waving at her.

"Maya! We need a fourth!"

She froze. Her hair was already escaping its bun. Her phone would be safer here. But this was what she'd wanted, right?

"Coming!" she called, before she could overthink it.

Fifteen minutes later, sweaty and laughing as she missed an easy shot, Maya caught Chloe filming from the sidelines, phone raised. Maya's hair was everywhere. She was terrible at padel. But as Javier high-fived her and said, "Not bad for a first timer," Maya realized something important.

Some of the best moments don't make it to Instagram at all.

Later, as they walked home, Chloe showed her the video. "Look at you," she said. Maya watched herself on screen—messy hair, imperfect form, but genuinely, unapologetically happy.

"Send it to me," Maya said. "I'm posting it."
