Serve, Purr, Rise
Maya's hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"You got this, bestie," Chloe whispered, squeezing her shoulder. "Remember what we practiced."
Maya nodded, but her stomach was doing somersaults. Today was the padel tournament qualifiers, and *he* was watching.
Jake Reynolds. The same Jake who'd made her life miserable since seventh grade. The same Jake who somehow still managed to be charming enough that nobody else seemed to notice.
"Maya's gonna choke," Jake's voice carried across the court. "Just like last year."
Her face burned. Last year, she'd frozen up completely during her first match, missing every shot. The nickname "Choke-la" had followed her for months.
She stepped onto the court, racket slick with sweat. The glass walls reflected her terrified expression back at herself.
Then she heard it—a tiny mew from behind the divider.
A scrawny calico cat, its fur matted and dirty, was sitting on the bench. It met her gaze with eyes that seemed way too old for its size. Like it had seen some things.
"Hey little fighter," Maya whispered.
The cat limped toward her, clearly hurt but still moving. Still showing up.
"What are you looking at?" Jake called out. "Practicing your forfeit speech?"
Something shifted inside Maya. The cat jumped onto her bench, curled up, and started purring like a tiny motor—loud, unapologetic, completely itself.
*Take up space,* it seemed to say. *Make noise. Be here.*
Maya adjusted her grip. "Actually, Jake? I was just admiring your technique from the sidelines. Very creative with those insults. Must be all that practice you get from being wrong all the time."
The court went silent.
"What—" Jake started, but Maya wasn't done.
"See, I used to be scared of you. But then I realized: bullies only have power when you care what they think. And I don't. Not anymore."
She turned to her opponent, signaled she was ready, and served the ball straight into the corner—perfect, powerful, absolutely intentional.
The calico purred louder.
Maya didn't win the tournament. She didn't even make it past the second round. But walking off that court, Chloe screaming "YOU ICON!" and hugging her so hard they both almost fell over, Maya felt like she'd won something way bigger.
That night, she convinced her mom to let her adopt the cat. She named her Lucky—because sometimes the best wins aren't the ones they give you trophies for.
And Jake? Jake finally learned that Maya wasn't anyone's target anymore. She was too busy being exactly, unapologetically herself.
