Secrets Beneath the Surface

Maya's been **swimming** through freshman year like she's underwater—holding her breath, waiting to surface. The last day of school pool party at Jordan's house is basically the social event of the season, and she's spent the morning curating her Instagram stories like she's some kind of professional **spy**. She's been lowkey stalking Jordan's posts since winter formal, trying to figure out if they're even into girls, into guys, or just mysterious as hell.

Jordan's the human equivalent of a **sphinx**—gorgeous, untouchable, and giving away absolutely nothing. Maya's watched them from across every cafeteria table, every classroom, every hallway, but Jordan's face is always this perfect mask. Like, what are they thinking? Do they ever crack?

Now Maya's standing by the snack table, pretend-casual, clutching a paper plate with a slice of **papaya** that she grabbed in a panic because someone literally ran into her. The fruit sits there, bright orange and conspicuous, just like her feels. Someone bumps her arm, and the papaya nearly does a backflip off her plate.

"Whoa, careful with the tropical situation," Jordan says, appearing beside her like they literally materialized out of thin air. Their voice is warmer than Maya expected, less Sphinx-like and more... human?

"It's aggressive fruit," Maya blurts, and immediately wants to evaporate. Aggressive fruit? Really?

But Jordan laughs. Not a polite laugh. A real laugh. "True though. Papaya's got main character energy."

They stand there for three entire minutes, talking about nothing and everything. Jordan talks about their weird obsession with ancient Egyptian mythology (hence the sphinx reputation—mysterious by choice, not nature). Maya talks about how she's been swimming through social situations all year, always feeling like she's drowning.

"You're not drowning though," Jordan says, grabbing a papaya slice from Maya's plate. "You're just... treading water. Like the rest of us."

Maya's heart does this thing where it forgets how to heart properly. Maybe she's not underwater after all. Maybe she's just in the pool with everyone else, trying to stay afloat.

And maybe—just maybe—the sphinx isn't as mysterious as they seem. Maybe they're just waiting for someone to ask the right questions.
