Screens in Paradise

Maya stood on the balcony of her Waikiki hotel room, the third Mai Tai of the evening sweating in her palm. The ocean stretched dark and infinite before her, but her eyes kept darting to the glowing screen of her iPhone, where Brad's latest text still pulsed with accusatory brightness: "We need to talk about the Org Pyramid restructuring. NOW."

She was supposed to be celebrating her promotion—Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives. Instead, she felt like a zombie moving through the motions of her own life, shambling from one corporate crisis to another, her brain deliciously devouring itself in an endless loop of PowerPoint decks and Q3 projections.

The Org Pyramid. Brad's favorite metaphor for the company hierarchy, which he'd been obsessed with climbing since before they'd started dating three years ago. He'd missed her birthday dinner to work on his "climbing strategy." He'd skipped her mother's funeral to prepare for a board meeting. And now, on what was supposed to be their celebratory vacation, he was 3,000 miles away, orchestrating some corporate coup that would probably cost her the promotion she'd just worked herself into an early grave to secure.

Her phone buzzed again. Then again. Notifications cascading like digital rain: Slack messages, calendar invites, urgent requests from people who couldn't possibly understand urgency.

Maya looked at the Mai Tai, then at the phone, then at the moonlit palm tree swaying gently in the Hawaiian breeze. She remembered Brad's voice from last week: "You're not thinking like leadership, Maya. You need to be more ruthless. More zombie-like, if anything—just keep moving forward, don't feel anything, don't stop."

She opened her messages, typed: "I'm done climbing." Then, with a decisiveness that felt foreign and electric, she blocked Brad on everything, shut off her phone completely, and walked back into the room where the first real vacation of her adult life was finally beginning.
