Screens and Courts

Maya's thumb hovered over her iPhone screen, refresh-rate anxiety kicking in. Liam still hadn't liked her story. The one where she'd casually posted about trying padel at the new club, pretending she'd been playing for months instead of, like, two days.

"You're overthinking it," Chloe said, scrolling through TikTok beside her at the coffee shop. "Liam's probably just busy with baseball practice."

Baseball. Of course. The sport Liam actually played, the one where he was basically team royalty, and here was Maya, catfishing her way through a racquet sport she'd discovered because his ex was obsessed with it. Smooth. Real smooth.

Her cat, Figaro, chose that moment to knock her water bottle off the counter at home, where she'd left him sleeping on a video call with Chloe. Figaro hated being ignored almost as much as Maya hated being ghosted.

"Whatever," Maya said, faking nonchalance. "Padel is actually fun. The learning curve is different from baseball, but—"

"Girl," Chloe cut in. "You looked up tutorials at 2 AM. I saw your search history."

Maya's face burned. Caught in 4K.

Her iPhone buzzed. Liam. Finally.

"Hey," his text read. "Saw your story. My cousin plays padel — said you're actually pretty solid for a beginner."

Maya blinked. Beginner? He knew?

"Also," he continued, "baseball's cool and all, but padel seems way more interesting. Maybe you could teach me sometime?"

Somewhere in the background, Figaro meowed. Chloe burst out laughing. And Maya's thumb, still hovering over her screen, finally stopped shaking.

Maybe she didn't need to curate the perfect version of herself after all. Maybe the messy, honest truth — the beginner-enthusiast, cat-owner, slightly chaotic realness — was exactly what landed her the text she'd been waiting for.

She typed back: "Only if you're ready to get absolutely destroyed on court."

His reply came instantly: "Challenge accepted."
