Screen Glare at Midnight

Maya felt like a zombie walking into Tyler's party. Her mom had made her swallow some vitamin D supplement on the way out, claiming it would help her 'social anxiety' — as if a chewable tablet could fix three years of feeling invisible in the hallways.

She adjusted her beanie, using it as a shield against the flood of juniors already drunk on cheap vodka and the promise of finally being someone. Her iphone buzzed in her pocket — her dad checking in, as if his carefully timed texts could somehow protect her from the raw chaos of teenage social hierarchy.

Then she saw him.

Caleb was leaning against the kitchen counter, laughing too loud at someone's joke, the way people do when they're trying to convince everyone they belong. He was wearing that stupid cowboy hat from spirit week, the one Maya had secretly wanted to compliment but never found the courage to.

He caught her eye across the room. For a second, neither looked away.

Then his ex, Jessica, walked up to him, and Maya watched as Caleb's face changed. He was performing again — becoming the person Jessica wanted him to be, the person everyone expected. It was such bull. The way they all played these parts, nobody ever showing up as themselves.

Maya's phone buzzed again. A text from Caleb: 'u look cute tonite'

She stared at the screen, her thumb hovering over the keyboard. Outside, someone yelled about a mechanical bull rental gone wrong. The party was getting chaotic, messy, real in a way that terrified her.

Maya typed back: 'tx. u 2. hat suits u'

Across the room, she saw Caleb read it. He actually smiled — not the fake one from before, but something smaller, more genuine. He started walking toward her, and Maya felt something shift in her chest, something that had nothing to do with vitamins or fake confidence.

Maybe tonight wouldn't be just another performance. Maybe, finally, it could be real.
