Screen Deep, Water Shallow
The pool lights turned Maya's birthday party into something magical—or at least, that's what everyone's Instagram stories would say. Lexi stood at the edge, clutching her iPhone 15 like it was the only thing keeping her grounded. The screen reflected her own doubtful expression back at her.
"You coming in or what?" shouted Brianna, already splashing around with half the sophomore class. Lexi hesitated. Her phone had been her best friend since moving to this school three months ago. Sad, maybe, but true. It held all her conversations, her memes, her carefully curated personality.
Then she noticed Sasha, the quiet girl from her English class, sitting alone on the pool steps, phone resting on her towel. Something about the way Sasha was watching everyone—like she wanted to join but didn't know how—made Lexi's chest tight.
Before she could overthink it, Lexi placed her iPhone on the pool deck. Her heart thudded harder than the bass from the Bluetooth speakers.
"Hey," Lexi said, slipping into the water beside Sasha. "I like your hoodie."
Sasha's face brightened. "Thanks! It's from this vintage store downtown—"
They talked for twenty minutes about music, teachers, the way everything felt like a performance until it didn't. The pool water grew colder but Lexi didn't care. Something real was happening here, something that couldn't be captured in a photo or compressed into 280 characters.
When Brianna finally called for cake, Lexi glanced at her abandoned phone. Screen black. Silent. For the first time all night, she didn't wonder about notifications. She'd made a friend, the old-fashioned way. No apps required.
"Tomorrow?" Sasha asked, hopeful.
"Tomorrow," Lexi promised.
Sometimes the best connections happen when you finally put down the screen and jump in the deep end.
