Screen Deep End

The iphone became a shield, its screen illuminating the corner of the patio where Maya sat, scrolling through the same three Instagram posts she'd already seen eight times. Around her, the pool party raged with music and laughter, but Maya felt like she was viewing it through thick glass.

"You're missing it," Jenna said, dropping onto the lounge chair beside her. Her best friend's hair was plastered to her face, water droplets dripping onto her shoulder. "Everyone's doing cannonballs off the diving board. Even Tyler."

Maya glanced up briefly. "Hard pass. My hair will frizz for actual weeks."

"You're such a wuss," Jenna grinned, but her expression softened when she saw Maya's grip tighten on her phone. "Hey, it's gonna be fine. Nobody's watching you."

But they were. Maybe not actively, but Maya could feel the teenage radar sweeping across the patio, detecting anyone who didn't fit. The pool shimmered like liquid turquoise in the afternoon sun, and suddenly everyone was turning toward her.

"Maya! Come swimming!" someone shouted. A chorus of agreement followed.

Her chest tightened. This was it—the moment she'd been avoiding all summer. The awkwardness of changing, the exposure of being in a swimsuit, the splashing and the noise and all the reasons she'd said no to every invitation since seventh grade.

Then something cold and wet nudged her hand.

Barnaby—Jenna's golden retriever—had materialized beside her chair, tail thumping against the metal frame. He looked at her with soulful eyes, then nudged her again, harder this time, almost knocking the phone from her hand.

"Barnaby, stop," Maya laughed, surprised to find her anxiety melting into genuine amusement. The dog leaned his full weight against her legs, and suddenly she was sliding off the chair, momentum taking over.

The splash was epic. Fully clothed, Maya hit the water with a magnificent, ungraceful belly flop that sent waves cascading over the pool deck. For a second, everything was muffled and blue and peaceful. Then she surfaced, sputtering, to find everyone cheering.

"Finally!" Jenna shouted from the edge. "About time you joined the human race!"

Maya wiped water from her eyes. Her iphone sat on the table, dark and forgotten. Her jeans were soaked, her dignity was compromised, and somehow, she'd never felt more free. Barnaby barked triumphantly from the side, like he'd planned the whole thing.

"Okay," Maya said, treading water. "Okay. This isn't terrible."

"Just wait," Jenna said, grinning. " Tyler's about to attempt a backflip off the diving board. You're gonna want to see this."

For the first time all summer, Maya wasn't watching through a screen. She was right there, treading water in the deep end, finally part of the story instead of just scrolling through someone else's.
