Screen Burn
Maya's iPhone died at 3:47 PM on the literal worst day of sophomore orientation. The battery icon had been screaming at her since lunch, but she'd been too deep in Emma's story dumps to notice. Now? Black screen. Total void.
'Did you see my post?' Jake slid into the seat beside her, that stupid-cute grin doing things to her stomach she refused to acknowledge.
'Uh, phone's dead.' The words tasted like defeat. No Insta, no Snap, no group chat blowing up with who was wearing what. Just her, Jake, and the terrifying prospect of actual conversation.
'Wild.' Jake's eyebrows shot up. 'Living like it's 2010. Hardcore.' But then—surprise twist—he kept talking. About summer camp and this nightmare adventure race where his team had to carry a six-foot inflatable bear through an obstacle course. 'I was sweating so much, I thought I'd straight-up melt,' he said, hands flying everywhere.
Maya actually laughed. Real laugh, not the performative one she used for adults or people she was trying to impress.
Something about being untethered from her phone made her... present. She noticed things. The way Jake's eyes crinkled when he smiled. That tiny freckle near his ear. The ridiculous goldfish pattern on his socks that were objectively awful but somehow weirdly charming.
'My little brother has those,' she said. 'The goldfish ones.'
'No way.' Jake practically lifted his foot onto the desk. 'These are my lucky socks. Won me that bear race.' He paused. 'Hey, you wanna come to the fall retreat with me? Like, actually go? No phones allowed anyway.'
Maya felt that electric buzz in her chest—the good kind, the kind that didn't need a filter or a caption. The kind that happened offline, in the messy middle of real moments.
'Yeah.' She smiled. 'I'd like that.'
Her phone would charge eventually. Emma's posts would still be there tomorrow. But Jake's laugh? The way he looked at her like she was actually interesting? That was happening right now. And somehow, that mattered way more than any story she'd ever post.
