Schemes and Storms

The cat appeared at my balcony door every Tuesday, like clockwork — a scrawny tabby with one ear that wouldn't stand straight. I'd started leaving food out after the night I found myself sobbing into a glass of wine at 3 AM, the smell of someone else's perfume still clinging to my blouse despite three showers. The creature had stared at me through the glass with ancient, judgmental eyes, and something about its silent witness broke me open.

Lightning cracked the sky in half as I sat at my desk, the glowing pyramid scheme on my computer screen illuminating the frantic emails I'd been exchanging with legal counsel. Three years. Three years I'd spent climbing this corporate ladder, learning every player's moves, their strategies, their weaknesses — and now the whole thing was about to collapse like a house of cards in a hurricane.

"You're sure about this?" Elena had asked, her hand lingering on my arm at the padel court earlier that day, her voice soft with something that might have been concern or might have been warning. We'd been meeting there weekly for months, ostensibly to play, but really to trade secrets, to strategize, to build what I'd thought was genuine connection in a world of manufactured relationships.

The cat scratched at the door, demanding entry. I let it in, watched it shake rain from its fur with regal indifference. It jumped onto my desk and sat directly on the keyboard, as if it knew exactly what I was about to do — what I was about to destroy.

My phone buzzed. A message from Elena: *Think carefully about what happens next. Some friends are only friends until they're not.*

The lightning flash revealed everything: the corporate pyramid I'd helped build, the friend who'd been feeding information to the very people I was planning to expose, the cat that had been watching me unravel for months. I deleted the whistleblower email. Some truths, I realized, aren't worth the cost of speaking them. Some schemes, you just learn to survive inside.
