Scheme of Things

Maya was running on three hours of sleep and a venti Americano when her phone buzzed again. Another group chat notification from "#BossBabeTribe."

"Yo Maya, did you hit your sales target yet? Remember, dream big or go home!"

She stared at the message. What had started as a way to save for her first car had morphed into a full-blown pyramid scheme she couldn't escape. Her friend Jenna had pitched it over Instagram DMs: "literally just sell these premium skincare products and build your team, it's totally not an MLM, my cousin's friend made 5K last month."

Two months later, Maya had recruited three friends, bought $400 worth of products she couldn't afford, and was averaging four hours of sleep between homework, track practice, and endless "training calls" that were basically just pep talks from people who'd also fallen for it.

"You look like a zombie," her best friend Marcus said at lunch, sliding onto the cafeteria bench beside her. "Seriously, when's the last time you hung out with us?"

Maya's phone buzzed again. She ignored it.

"I'm fine," she lied. "Just... busy."

"With what?" Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Because according to your finsta, you're either running to 'empowerment workshops' or posting cringey captions about 'manifesting abundance.' That's not you, Maya."

The truth hit her like a linebacker. She'd been so desperate to prove she could be successful, so scared of being just another broke teenager, that she'd let herself get played. The pyramid wasn't about selling products—it was about selling a fantasy to people who couldn't afford to buy in.

That night, she typed out her resignation message to the group chat. Then she deleted the app. Then she called Marcus.

"Wanna come over and watch that zombie apocalypse show you like?" she asked. "I'll make popcorn."

"Finally," he said. "The real Maya's back."
