Scheme Like You Mean It
Marcus drowned in chlorine and expectations.
Literally. He was gasping for air at the YMCA, swimming laps like his life depended on it because Coach Miller said if he didn't cut three seconds off his time, he'd be riding the bench all season. The water burned his eyes, but not as much as the group chat exploding on his phone near the pool deck.
"Bro, you coming to Jordan's presentation?" texted Tyler. "It's gonna be lit."
Marcus stared at his phone. His older sister Jordan had dropped out of college three months ago to pursue "entrepreneurship." Which apparently meant cornering everyone they knew into buying overpriced protein shakes.
A pyramid scheme. A literal pyramid scheme.
"Yeah," Marcus texted back. "Totally."
**What actually happened:** Jordan's "presentation" was in their grandma's basement, surrounded by twelve confused relatives and a whiteboard she'd definitely stolen from school. Marcus sat in the back, hoodie up, dying inside a little.
"So the key is," Jordan said, pointing at a triangular diagram, "you get five people. Then THEY get five people. Then—"
"This is a pyramid scheme," their grandma said. "I remember these from the 90s."
"It's not a pyramid scheme, Grandma! It's... multi-level entrepreneurship."
Marcus had never wanted to disappear more in his life. His phone buzzed — Tyler: "bro u good??"
Then Jordan's eyes landed on him. "My little brother Marcus is actually thinking about joining. He's really been **bearing** a lot of stress lately with swimming and school, and this could be his path to financial freedom."
Every head turned. Marcus's face burned hotter than the chlorine.
"Uh," he said. "I mean—"
"SHOW 'EM THE PRODUCTS, MARCUS!"
He stood up, walked to the front like he was heading to the electric chair, and held up a protein powder tub. "It's... chocolate?"
Their grandma sighed. "I'll buy one tub."
**After:** Marcus lay on his bed, mortified, while Jordan counted her "commission" in the hallway. His phone lit up again.
Tyler: "that was actually kinda iconic ngl"
Another text from someone else: "your sister is relentless lol"
Marcus rolled over, face burning. Tomorrow he'd have to face everyone at school. Tomorrow he'd have to swim until his lungs gave out.
But tonight? Tonight he **bore** witness to the most cringe moment of his life, and somehow, some tiny part of him was weirdly proud that Jordan could just... go for it like that. Even if it was a scam.
He grabbed his gear bag for morning practice. Whatever. At least swimming made sense. You swim, you get faster. No pyramid charts required.
