Saltwater Summer

The concrete burned against my bare feet as I stood at the edge of the pool, clutching my towel like it was a lifeline. Everyone else was already in the water, laughing and screaming, while I was stuck on dry land, paralyzed by the same thing that always ruined everything: my brain.

"You coming in or what?" Jake called from the middle of the pool. His hair was wet and perfect, naturally, unlike mine which would probably look like a drowned poodle once I finally submerged.

"Yeah, just give me a sec," I yelled back, my voice doing that embarrassing crack thing. I wiped my sweating palms on my shorts, feeling like a total fraud. Who has sweaty palms at a pool party? That's not supposed to be physically possible.

That's when Buster, Mrs. Chen's ancient golden retriever, decided my paralyzed state was an invitation. He bounded over, dripping water everywhere, and promptly shook himself off right next to me.

"Buster, no!" I squealed, but it was too late. I was soaked.

Jake started laughing. "Well, you're already wet now. Might as well actually go swimming."

I stood there, wet dog smell emanating from my shirt, water dripping down my face, and realized something: I could either keep standing here being miserable, or I could just jump in. So I did.

The pool was shockingly cold, but as I surfaced, sputtering and laughing, I felt something shift. Jake was there, smiling at me, and for the first time all summer, I wasn't overthinking every micro-movement. I was just a girl in a pool, covered in dog water, finally having fun.

"About time," Jake said, splashing me.

I splashed back. "Don't get used to it. This is a one-time confidence boost."

He grinned. "We'll see."

And just like that, I wasn't the awkward girl on the edge anymore. I was just part of the water, part of the noise, part of everything I'd been too scared to join.
