Saltwater Second Chances

Maya stood frozen at the edge of the bonfire glow, clutching her red solo cup like a lifeline. Her hair—she'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting those beachy waves—was already frizzing in the humidity. Typical.

"Hey! Someone grab that dog!" a guy yelled.

A golden retriever puppy came bounding through the crowd, trailing what looked like someone's underwear. Maya's crush, Leo, lunged for the dog but missed, tumbling into a beach chair.

Maya reacted faster than her brain could process. She dropped her drink and sprinted toward the water, the puppy's name—"Buster!"—echoing behind her. The golden retriever loved the chase, splashing into the ocean waves like this was the best game ever.

Soaked to the waist, Maya finally grabbed the puppy's collar. But when she looked down, the underwear was gone—lost to the Atlantic. Whatever. Win some, lose some.

She waded back to shore, dripping and covered in sand, to find Leo waiting with a towel. His friends were watching.

"That was... actually really impressive," he said, grinning. "I'm Leo, by the way."

"Maya." She squeezed water from her ruined hair. "This is not how I planned to make a first impression."

He laughed. "Dude, you just saved Buster from becoming the ocean's laundry problem. Meanwhile, I ate sand face-first." He gestured at the group. "We're about to roast marshmallows. You in?"

Maya looked at her frizzy, sandy reflection in someone's sunglasses, then at the circle of teens around the bonfire, firelight flickering against the palm trees. Something loosened in her chest.

"Yeah," she said, accepting the towel. "Yeah, I'm in."
