Saltwater and Second Chances

Maya tugged the brim of her stupid hat lower. The one her friends swore was aesthetic, even though she felt like a knockoff cowboy in the middle of a California beach bonfire.

"You good?" asked Jake, the senior she'd been lowkey obsessing over since homecoming.

"Yeah, just..." Her iPhone buzzed in her hand. Again. Maya's group chat was roasting her outfit in real-time. live ur life girl but maybe not like that read one message. Another: why the hat 💀

She shoved the phone in her pocket and started running toward the water. Away from the fire. Away from Jake's concerned eyes. Away from everything.

"Maya, wait!"

She didn't stop until her sneakers hit the wet sand. The Pacific Ocean stretched dark and endless before her, and suddenly she couldn't breathe. The performance. The constant curation. The exhausting game of teen social dynamics where one wrong move could ruin your entire semester.

Her phone slipped from sweaty fingers. Splash.

"No, no, NO!" She dropped to her knees, plunging her palm into the freezing saltwater, grasping blindly until her fingers closed around her iPhone.

When she pulled it up, the screen was black. Gone. Six hundred dollars of social capital gone in three seconds.

"You okay?" Jake stood there, sand clinging to his Vans.

Maya laughed. Actually laughed. "I literally just destroyed my entire social life in one second."

Jake studied her face. "That's a bad thing?"

She looked at him. Really looked. The hat slipped off and tumbled into the waves.

"No," she said, realizing it was true. "Maybe it's not."

They sat on the beach until the bonfire burned to embers. No phones. No filters. No audience. Just the sound of waves and a boy who thought she was prettier without the hat anyway.
