Running with the Bull
Maya's Converse were definitely not made for this. The cow field was more mud than grass, and somewhere between "this'll be fun" and "why am I even here," she'd lost her left shoe in the muck.
"You coming?" Liam called from ahead, already halfway to the old barn where the party was raging. His varsity jacket was somehow still pristine, because obviously the universe had decided to give him main character energy while everyone else got background NPC treatment.
"Running!" Maya yelled back, grabbing her shoe with a squelch. "Literally!"
She'd been crushing on Liam since freshman year, and somehow freshman year had turned into junior year without her ever managing to form a complete sentence around him. But tonight, tonight was different. Tonight, she was going to be fun. Spontaneous. The kind of girl who crashed barn parties and didn't worry about her mom finding out.
The barn was exactly what you'd expect from a small town Friday night — cheap beer, country music someone's dad definitely approved of, and enough hormonal energy to power a small city. Maya's heart was running a marathon against her ribs. She squeezed through the crowd, plastering on her best I-totally-belong-here face.
Then she saw it.
The bull. In the corner of the barn, tied to a support beam, watching everyone with eyes that said "I've seen better days." It wasn't even a real bull — just someone's pet steer that had been brought in as, like, decor? This felt illegal somehow.
"That's Buster," someone said beside her. Maya jumped. It was a girl with blue hair and an不安 smile. "My brother's 4H project. He's basically a giant puppy."
"He's... a lot," Maya managed. The bull snorted and lowered his head like he was about to charge, which definitely wasn't puppy behavior.
Suddenly, a streak of orange fur bolted through the barn doors. A cat — skinny, feral, absolutely chaotic — launched itself straight at Buster.
The bull lost it. Chaos erupted. People scattered. Maya found herself somehow between a panicked steer and a door that wouldn't open, Liam nowhere to be found, her social life flashing before her eyes.
The cat, however, was having the time of its life, dancing around Buster's hooves like this was all just collateral damage of being the main character.
"OPEN THE DOOR!" Maya screamed, and then she was running, not away from the chaos but straight toward it, shoving past terrified juniors and spilled drinks, reaching for the cat because SOMEONE had to be the person who did something—
Her hands closed around orange fur just as Buster's head came down. She rolled, cat clutched to her chest, mud everywhere, dignity completely MIA.
Silence.
Then applause.
Liam was laughing. "You're crazy," he said, like it was a compliment. "That was honestly badass."
Maya sat up, covered in mud, holding a cat that was now purring like a tractor engine. Her heart was still racing, but for the first time all night, it wasn't from anxiety.
"Yeah," she said, grinning despite everything. "I guess I kind of am."
The bull snorted, like he was offended he wasn't the main character anymore. The cat flicked its tail and Maya finally understood what it meant to be truly, unapologetically herself — mud stains, chaos, and all.
