Running with Storm Sprites

Maya loved storms more than anything. While other children hid under blankets when thunder rumbled, Maya pressed her nose against the window, watching rain paint silver rivers down the glass. But tonight was different—tonight, the storm called her name.

The backyard was transformed. Puddles had become miniature lakes, and in the strange gray light, Maya saw something impossible. A tiny creature, no bigger than her thumb, was struggling in a puddle. It had wings like a dragonfly but glowed with the same bright white as lightning.

Maya ran outside, not caring about getting soaked. The creature was caught in a whirlpool of water, spinning helplessly. She reached in carefully and cupped it in her hands. It was warm, like a tiny star, and it buzzed against her palms.

"Thank you," said a voice like wind chimes. "I'm a storm sprite. I fell while riding the lightning!"

Maya gasped. "You ride lightning?"

"We help the clouds!" The sprite shook sparkling drops from its wings. "But I need to get back before the storm ends. Will you run with me?"

Maya nodded, heart pounding with excitement. Together they raced across the yard, the sprite guiding her toward the old oak tree where lightning struck most often. The rain felt magical now—each drop was like a tiny jewel falling from the sky.

"Faster!" called the sprite. "The lightning is waiting!"

A brilliant bolt flashed down, and Maya felt herself lifted, just for a moment, weightless and glowing. When she looked down, the sprite was gone—home at last.

Maya walked back inside, dripping but grinning. Her mother wrapped her in a warm towel. "You'll catch a cold!" she scolded, but smiled at Maya's happy face.

That night, Maya dreamed of flying on lightning bolts and dancing in rain puddles with invisible friends. She learned that the most magical adventures come from helping others, even when they're small and sparkling and need someone to run them home.
