Running with Secrets
Emma's cross country shoes were practically neon, the way her nerves lit up every time Jacob stretched near the starting line. She'd been secretly watching him since summer training - not creepy-stalking, just, like, appreciating from a distance. The way his calves flexed when he ran was totally normal to notice. Right?
The Central High meet changed everything. Emma was barely keeping pace with the JV pack when she heard it - "The Bull!" someone shouted, and this massive senior from Eastvale came charging past like he'd been shot out of a cannon. He'd earned the nickname for plowing through anyone in his path, and today, Emma was directly in his warpath.
Her lungs burned like she'd swallowed fire as she tried to sprint ahead, but the Bull was gaining. She could hear his breathing, heavy and rhythmic, closing the distance between them. Just as they approached the final straightaway, Emma's stomach did something terrible - that kale-spinach smoothie she'd chugged for "performance energy" decided it wasn't feeling performance-ready anymore.
She barely made it to the porta-potty before her stomach staged a full rebellion.
When she finally stumbled out, face burning, Jacob was there. "You okay?" He wasn't laughing. "The Bull's intimidated by you. Saw you disappear and thought you were pulling some secret strategy."
Emma stared at him. Jacob knew she existed?
"More like secret spinach situation," she mumbled, and Jacob actually laughed. Not mean-laughed, but like, genuine.
"Smoothie casualty?" he asked. "Happened to me last year. Green protein powder, mile three, disaster zone."
They walked back to the team together, and Emma realized something: she didn't have to be the perfect runner, or the cool girl who knew everything. She could just be Emma - the girl who drank questionable smoothies and sometimes came in last place but still showed up.
"Next time," Jacob said, "skip the spinach. And maybe run with me?"
