Running with Foxfire

Maya's sneakers slapped against the pavement, lungs burning, legs pumping. This was her third time this week—running past Jordan's house, hoping to catch a glimpse, hoping to look casual instead of desperate. She was 15, awkward in her skin, and Jordan was everything she wasn't: effortless, mysterious, surrounded by the kind of friends who made Maya feel invisible.

"You're always running," her mom said at dinner. "What's the rush?"

Maya didn't have an answer. Not one she could say out loud.

The third time, Jordan was outside on the porch. And there was a cat—a scrawny, orange thing with one ear that folded weirdly, curled up on Jordan's lap like it owned the place. Jordan was stroking its fur with a gentleness that made Maya's chest hurt.

"This is Buster," Jordan said, looking up. Their eyes met, and Maya forgot how to breathe. "You gonna keep running past, or are you gonna come say hi?"

A week later, Maya was sitting on that porch, Buster purring in her lap like they'd known each other for years. Jordan called him "the cat who chose us," like they were special. Like they'd been chosen.

But here's the thing about appearances: they're rarely the whole story.

Maya learned that Jordan's seemingly perfect life was full of pressure, expectations, sleepless nights. That behind that foxlike smile—sly, knowing, a little dangerous—was someone just trying to figure it out too. Someone who'd started running once, in their own way, and hadn't stopped.

"We're all running from something," Jordan said one evening, Buster between them like a bridge. "Or running toward it. I haven't figured out which yet."

The cat chose them both. And in choosing them, gave them something better than perfect: real.

Maya kept running, but now she had somewhere to run to. Sometimes with Jordan, sometimes alone. Always with the memory of orange fur and knowing eyes and a fox-smile that meant something entirely different than she'd first thought.

Sometimes you run in circles and end up exactly where you need to be.
