Running Past the Zombie Bear

Maya hadn't slept properly in three days. Finals week was turning her into something resembling a zombie — pale, shambling through hallways, surviving on iced coffee and desperate hope. Her eyes burned. Her brain felt like it was operating on a three-second delay.

"You look dead, chica," Leo said, falling into step beside her at lunch. "Like, actually deceased."

"Thanks, Leo. Really boosting the confidence there." Maya forced a laugh, but it came out hollow.

They sat at their usual table. Everyone was talking about the Winter Semi-Formal — who was going, who was asking who, whether Jordan would finally make a move on Alexis. Maya felt left behind, like she was watching everything through a foggy window.

"You going?" Leo asked.

"To the dance?" Maya shook her head. "Can't. Track regionals are that weekend. Coach says if I miss practice, I'm off the team."

"That's rough." Leo paused. "So... you're like, choosing running over your entire social life? That's wild."

Maya's stomach twisted. Was she? Because honestly, she wasn't even sure she liked running anymore. The sport had become this huge bear sitting on her chest — expectations, pressure, everyone assuming she'd get a scholarship because she was "the girl who could run." But nobody asked if she actually wanted to.

That night at practice, her legs felt like lead. Every lap was a battle. Coach kept yelling from the sidelines, something about form and breathing, but Maya couldn't focus. The bear was heavier than ever.

Then she saw Jordan on the bleachers. Waiting. For her.

Something clicked. The zombie fog lifted. She picked up speed, feeling her lungs burn in a good way this time. She wasn't running for a scholarship or for Coach or for anyone else's expectations.

She was running toward something real.

"Hey," Jordan said when she finally collapsed onto the grass, heart pounding. "You looked fast out there."

Maya grinned, exhausted but weirdly okay with it. "Yeah. Guess I'm not so dead after all."
