Running On Thin Cable

catrunningcable

Luna wakes me at 2 AM with whiskers to my face, demanding tribute like she pays the rent here. My calico cat knows the routine—she's my co-pilot, my witness, the only one who sees me when the rest of the world's asleep.

I'm running an underground Minecraft server from my bedroom closet, the glow of three monitors painting my face in RGB rainbows. At school, I'm just quiet Malik in the back of AP Chem, but online? I'm legendary. My server's got 2,000 people waiting for the Friday night event, the one that'll finally fund my escape from this town.

The ethernet cable snakes across my floor like a white lifeline, frayed at the edges from Luna's chewing habit. It's everything—my tether to a world where I matter, where people respect my builds and my leadership and don't see the anxious kid who can barely make eye contact in the cafeteria.

Tonight's the big stream. My subscriber count is climbing. I can almost taste the freedom.

Then Luna goes full chaos mode. She bolts across my keyboard at mach speed, paws firing like she's playing DDR with my sanity. OBS crashes. Discord explodes with MALIK WTF messages. My chat's going wild, and I'm hyperventilating because this was supposed to be my moment.

But here's the thing about hitting absolute rock bottom in front of two thousand people: you stop caring about image.

I'm in frame now. Not just my Minecraft skin, but me—oversized hoodie, messy hair, panic attack and all. Luna's perched on my shoulder like a fuzzy angel of destruction. And something shifts.

The chat floods with support. I'm not the legendary admin anymore. I'm just a kid with anxiety and a chaotic cat, running on caffeine and dreams, trying to build something that matters.

I fixed the stream. The event killed it. But more importantly, I finally stopped running from who I actually am.

Some days, I'm still that kid in the back of chemistry class. But now I know that's not the only version of me worth being.
