Running on Empty

The iPhone glowed at 3:14 AM, its ghostly illumination the only light in Marcus's corner office. Forty-seventh floor. The kind of view that was supposed to mean you'd made it.

Another notification from the trading floor: BULL MARKET EXTENDS — NEW ALL-TIME HIGHS.

Marcus stared at the screen until his eyes burned. The numbers meant nothing anymore. They were just digits dancing to someone else's tune, and he was the conductor who'd forgotten why the music mattered.

"You're running yourself into the ground," Elena had told him three days ago, standing in this same office with a box of her things. "I can't watch you do it anymore."

She was right. He was running — had been running for years. Running from the mediocrity he'd grown up with, running toward a validation that never seemed to arrive, running so fast he hadn't noticed he was running in circles.

His iPhone buzzed again. A client in Tokyo. Another deal. Another commission. Another reason not to stop.

The bull statue on his desk — a bronze piece he'd bought after his first million — seemed to mock him now. Its frozen charge toward nothing captured everything about his life: momentum without meaning, power without purpose. He'd placed it there as a trophy. Now it looked like a warning.

Marcus stood and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. The city sprawled beneath him, a grid of lights marking the lives of millions of people who were actually living them. Somewhere down there, Elena was sleeping. Or maybe she wasn't. Maybe she was awake, finally free.

He picked up his iPhone, thumb hovering over the shutdown button. One tap. That was all it would take.

The bull market roared on.

Marcus turned off the phone.

For the first time in fifteen years, he wasn't running anymore.
