Running in the Right Direction

Maya's legs burned as she pounded the dirt path, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Cross country wasn't just a sport—it was her escape, her identity, the one place where her GPA, her parents' expectations, and the pressure to be perfect didn't matter. She'd been running since seventh grade, but lately she felt like she was running toward nothing.

"You're overthinking it again," said Jamie, her teammate and oldest friend, as they stretched after practice. "You always do before regionals."

Maya forced a smile. "I'm good. Just focused."

But she wasn't good. The gnawing feeling in her chest had nothing to do with racing. It was the way she curating her Instagram posts, laughed too loud at jokes she didn't find funny, and agreed with people she secretly couldn't stand. She was running from herself, and she was getting tired.

Friday's pasta dinner at Chloe's house should've been fun, but Maya felt like she was performing. She picked at her food, making sure she looked relaxed, making sure she said the right things. Then disaster struck—she took a bite of Chloe's spinach-artichoke dip and laughed at something Tyler said.

The whole table went quiet.

"What?" she asked, her stomach dropping.

Instead of answering, Liv—the quiet sophomore who barely spoke—mouthed something and pointed at her own teeth.

Maya's face burned. Spinach. Green, obvious, embarrassing spinach stuck in her teeth. Everyone had seen it. Everyone had noticed. And instead of laughing or pointing or making it a thing, Liv had just... helped her. Subtly. Without making a scene.

Later, in the bathroom, Maya scrubbed her teeth until her gums hurt.

"Hey," Liv said from the doorway. "You okay?"

"Yeah. mortified, but okay. Thanks for... you know."

Liv shrugged. "We've all been there. Besides, real friends don't let you walk around with spinach in your teeth all night."

Something about the way she said it—so casual, so unbothered—made Maya's throat tight. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"How are you so... real? Like, you don't seem to care what anyone thinks."

Liv laughed. "Oh, I care. I just decided that being disliked for who I am beats being liked for who I'm not."

The words hit Maya like a physical blow. All this time, she'd been running—literally and figuratively—terrified that people would see the real her. Meanwhile, Liv had just decided to stop running.

"I think I need a new strategy," Maya said quietly.

Liv smiled. "Start with the spinach. It's already out there. What's the worst that could happen?"

That night, Maya posted a picture of herself with messy hair and spinach teeth and the caption: "Mortifying but real. #norefilter" She woke up to thirty comments, half making fun of her, half saying finally, and one DM from Liv: "Welcome to the real race."
