Running Backward

The neighborhood pool party was supposed to be chill, but Maya's stomach felt like it was doing gymnastics. All summer she'd been stuck inside recovering from her appendix surgery, watching her friends' stories glow with golden hours and pool floats while she became the person who "couldn't make it."

"You good?" Liam asked, appearing beside her with two sodas. His hair was wet from swimming, somehow making him look even more effortless than usual.

"Yeah," Maya lied, adjusting her oversized t-shirt that covered her scar. "Just... not feeling the whole swimming thing today."

Her emotional support dog, Barnaby—a scruffy terrier mix with one ear that flopped sideways—pressed against her leg like he knew. She'd begged her mom to let him come, claiming she needed "fresh air" but really needing her living security blanket.

"Your dog's lowkey living his best life," Liam said, scratching Barnaby's ears. "Look at him vibing."

Barnaby was indeed living his best life, belly-up on the concrete while someone's little sister dressed him in a flower crown. The exact opposite of Maya's internal crisis.

"Hey everyone!" Chloe, who Maya had been best friends with since second grade but now seemed to drift between friend groups like a social butterfly, appeared holding her phone. "Who wants to do the TikTok trend? You know, the bear one?"

Maya froze. The bear trend. The one where everyone did this silly bear claw pose and growled at the camera, pretending to be fierce and wild. The one everyone had been doing without her.

"I'll pass," someone said. "That's so middle school."

"No, it's iconic!" Chloe defended, but the moment had already flatlined.

Except then Maya's phone buzzed. Her surgery recovery group chat. Someone posted: "Post your scars. Own your story."

And suddenly Maya was running toward the pool, not away from it. She pulled off her t-shirt, revealing the jagged line across her abdomen that she'd been hiding all summer. She cannonballed into the deep end, water exploding around her like a declaration.

When she surfaced, everyone was watching.

"What?" she asked, dripping wet, grinning like crazy. "I've been bear mode all summer. You guys just didn't know."

Chloe burst out laughing. "Okay but actually though."

Barnaby barked from the sidelines, and for the first time in months, Maya felt like she could finally stop running from who she was becoming.
