Ruby and the Wishing Goldfish
Ruby loved running through her grandmother's garden, especially at sunset when everything turned gold and amber. One evening, while darting between the rosebushes, she spotted something strange glittering near the old oak tree—a mysterious golden cable that seemed to shimmer and hum with its own light.
Curious, Ruby reached out and touched the cable. ZING! A warm tingle rushed up her arm, and suddenly she could hear faint music coming from somewhere beyond the garden fence. Without thinking, she began following the glowing cable as it snaked through the grass, over the stone wall, and right into her neighbor's backyard.
There, beside a tiny pond surrounded by swaying palm trees in pots, sat the most beautiful goldfish Ruby had ever seen. Its scales were made of real gold, and when it spoke, its voice sounded like wind chimes.
"You found my golden cable," the goldfish said, swimming in excited circles. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to follow it!"
The goldfish explained that it was actually a magical prince transformed by a lonely wizard who wanted company. "The cable appears only to children with pure hearts," it said. "If you help me return to my pond in the Enchanted Kingdom, I'll grant you one wish."
Ruby didn't hesitate. Together, she devised a plan. She would carry the goldfish in a water-filled jar, following the golden cable all the way to the park where, according to legend, a portal to the Enchanted Kingdom opened every full moon.
That night, under silver moonlight, Ruby crept out of her house with the jar tucked safely in her backpack. The golden cable stretched before her like a ribbon of starlight, leading her through quiet streets and across the sleeping town. When she reached the park pond, the water began to glow.
"Thank you," the goldfish whispered, and with a splash, it jumped into the pond and was instantly transformed into a handsome prince with golden hair. "You showed me kindness without asking for anything in return. For that, I give you my friendship forever."
He pressed a small golden scale into Ruby's palm. "Whenever you need me, hold this and think of our adventure."
Ruby ran home, her heart bursting with joy. She never did use the scale to make a wish—simply knowing she had a magical friend was gift enough. And sometimes, when she visited the park at sunset, she could still see a golden flash beneath the water, and hear the faint sound of wind chimes laughing.
