Ruby and the Water Sphinx

Ruby was a curious girl who loved exploring the woods behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she followed a babbling brook deeper into the forest than she had ever gone before. The water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight, and Ruby felt drawn to see where it led.

Around a bend, she discovered a crystal-clear pond with a mysterious creature resting on a mossy rock. It looked like a giant cat with the head of a person and beautiful golden wings folded at its sides. Ruby gasped - it was a sphinx!

The sphinx opened one amber eye. "Hello, little one," it rumbled gently. "I am Sophie the Sphinx. I have been waiting for a friend."

"You've been waiting for me?" Ruby asked, stepping closer.

Sophie nodded. "For many years, I have guarded this magical water. It can grant one wish each day, but only to someone with a pure heart. I have been very lonely."

Ruby felt sad for the sphinx. "I'll be your friend! I can come back every day."

The sphinx smiled, and her golden wings stretched wide. "Then dip your cupped hands into the water and make your first wish."

Ruby knelt by the pond and scooped up the shimmering water. She thought hard. What did she want most? Toys? Candy? A puppy?

She looked at Sophie's lonely face and knew exactly what to wish for.

"I wish that everyone who visits this beautiful pond would find a friend," Ruby said, releasing the water back into the pond.

The water glowed with rainbow colors, and Sophie's eyes filled with happy tears. "That is the kindest wish anyone has ever made. You have a wise heart, Ruby."

From that day on, Ruby visited her sphinx friend every afternoon. They played riddle games, shared stories, and sometimes other children came too. The magical water worked - everyone who visited found a special friend, whether it was the sphinx, another child, or even a new animal companion.

Ruby learned that the best wishes aren't for things, but for bringing people together. And Sophie learned that even a guardian of magic water needs friends too.

And they lived happily ever after, with the water shimmering and their friendship growing stronger each day.
