Rooftop Reflections

The rooftop pool shimmered under the Vegas moon, its surface broken only by the occasional drunk sales executive doing cannonballs. Elena sat at the edge, her designer hat pulled low despite the midnight hour, nursing a whiskey she'd stolen from the open bar.

"You're missing the networking hour," a voice said behind her. She didn't turn. Mark, the regional VP who'd made her life hell for three years.

"Would rather drown in this pool than listen to more bull about Q4 projections," she replied, finally looking at him. His reflection in the water showed him loosening his tie, the first crack in his armor she'd ever seen.

He sat beside her, close enough that she could smell his expensive cologne mixed with desperation. "They're going to fire me tomorrow."

Elena's hand froze with her glass halfway to her lips. "What?"

"I made up the numbers. The whole bull story about the European expansion? Never happened." He laughed bitterly, staring at his palm. "Funny thing about lying with your palm open like this—you forget people can read you."

She thought about all the extra hours, all the times he'd called her at midnight, all the stress about hitting targets that might have never been real. The anger rose, hot and sudden.

"You son of a—"

"I know." He took her hat off, setting it between them like a peace offering. "But I'm also the one who recommended you for my job."

The silence stretched, filled with the distant sounds of slot machines and their own breathing. Elena realized she wasn't surprised. Mark had always been terrible at being the villain, too human, too transparent.

She finished her drink, standing up. "Give me your keycard."

"What?"

"Your room. It has the better view. And I'm not sleeping in the hallway while you decide whether to jump or not." She held out her hand, palm open, waiting.

He stared at her, then laughed—for real this time. "You really are the only one who could handle this mess."

"Mark," she said, still holding out her hand, "shut up and give me the damn key."

He did. She pulled him up, and they walked back into the casino together, leaving the pool and the lies behind them.
