Rooftop Reflections

The corporate retreat was her idea. Elena stood at the edge of the infinity pool, champagne flute in hand, watching the water stretch toward the city lights below. She'd brought the entire department here—to celebrate, she said, though everyone knew it was really about loyalty.

David approached, his footsteps silent on the wet deck. Two years as her director of operations, and he still moved like someone who didn't want to be noticed.

"You've been quiet tonight," she said, not turning.

"Just thinking."

"About?"

"About how you hired a private investigator three weeks ago. About how you've been going through my emails, my phone records." He paused. "About how you already know I'm the corporate spy your competitors planted."

The water lapped against the pool's edge, a gentle, relentless sound. Elena turned slowly, her face unreadable in the ambient lighting.

"And yet you're still here."

"I'm still here," David said, "because somewhere between stealing your proprietary data and late nights in your office going over projections, I fell in love with you."

She laughed, but there was no humor in it. "You fell in love with the job. With the access."

"Maybe at first. But that was before." He stepped closer. "You hired me when no one else would. You took a chance on someone with gaps in his resume and stories that didn't add up. Either you're the most trusting person in corporate America, or—"

"Or I saw exactly what you were and decided to keep my enemies close."

They stood there, silent as the water between them reflected distant headlights and stars.

"So what happens now?" David asked finally. "Security? Police?"

Elena set down her champagne. She slipped off her heels and stepped into the pool, fully clothed, the water rising to her waist as she turned to face him.

"Now you tell me everything my competitors know. Then you help me plug the leaks. Then—" she extended a hand "—we see if whatever this is survives the damage."

David watched her hand. The water rippled around her waist, distorting her reflection.

"And if I refuse?"

"Then I lose," she said simply. "And you win. But neither of us gets to find out what happens next."

He took her hand, and the water closed over them both.
