Rippling Truths

runningwaterpalmbull

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, her hands slick against her thighs. Why did her palms always decide to reenact a monsoon right when she needed them not to?

"You're seriously not gonna talk to him?" Chloe rolled her eyes, flicking her hair back. "That's actually bull, Maya. You've been obsessed with Jordan since seventh grade."

"I'm not obsessed," Maya protested, though her voice cracked. "I just... appreciate his aesthetic from a distance."

Chloe's laugh was sharp, cutting through the splashing and screaming around them. The pool party was peak summer chaos—floatie wars, someone's older brother blinding everyone with too much cologne, and the bass-heavy music that seemed determined to make everyone's heart race in sync.

"You're literally running away from every opportunity," Chloe called over her shoulder as she dove into the water, leaving Maya alone with her swirling thoughts.

Maya watched the water ripple outward from Chloe's splash, distorting the reflection of the group across the pool. Jordan was over there, laughing at something his friend said, his sun-bleached curls catching the light. He looked so effortless, while Maya was over here calculating social dynamics like they were AP Chem equations.

Her phone buzzed. A text from her mom: *having fun?*

Maya typed back *yeah!* but stared at the letters, feeling like a fraud. Since when did *existing* become this complicated? In middle school, you just showed up and played whatever game everyone else was playing. Now everything was a performance—what you wore, who you talked to, how you stood.

Jordan caught her eye across the pool and raised his hand in a wave. Maya's stomach did a full gymnastics routine. She raised her hand back, then immediately dropped it like it was on fire. Smooth. Truly smooth.

"Maya!" Jordan was actually—oh no—walking over. Water dripped from his trunks, puddling on the concrete deck. "Hey, haven't seen you much this summer."

"Yeah, just..." Maya's brain was rebooting. "Working a lot and stuff."

"Cool." He ran a hand through his wet hair. "We should hang out sometime. Before school starts."

Before her brain could panic-analyze it, her mouth heard itself say, "Yeah, I'd like that."

Jordan's smile was real, not polite. "Great. I'll text you."

As he walked away, Maya's palms were still sweaty, her heart still racing, but the weight in her chest had lightened. Maybe she didn't have to have it all figured out. Maybe you could be nervous and brave at the same time.

Chloe surfaced beside her, water streaming down her face. "Well?"

"He's gonna text me," Maya said, feeling the words settle into truth.

"Finally," Chloe grinned, splashing water at her. "Now get in here—the water's perfect."
