Riddles on the Court

Maya's hair had a mind of its own today, frizzing up like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Great. Just what she needed when Tyler—the actual sphinx of the sophomore class—had finally noticed her existence at lunch.

"You coming to the padel tournament after school?" Tyler asked, leaning against her locker with that effortless cool that made everyone else look like they were trying too hard.

"Padel?" Maya choked. "I don't even know what that is."

"It's like tennis but, you know, not," Tyler said, shrugging. "Coach says if we don't get enough girls to sign up, he's gonna make the JV football team fill the roster. And those guys are basically bulls in a china shop."

Maya signed up. Obviously.

The tournament was a disaster from start to finish. Her partner was Quincy, who spent more time checking his reflection in his racket than actually playing. Their opponents? Tyler and his perfect hair and his lethal backhand.

Every time Maya swung at the ball, she connected with nothing but air. Her racket kept hitting the wire fencing. TWANG. TWANG. The sound echoed through the court like someone making fun of her.

"You good?" Tyler called out, concern lacing his voice. Maybe.

"Peachy!" Maya squeaked, wiping sweat from her forehead.

Then came the point that changed everything. Tyler hit a ball that bounced off the back wall, flying toward Quincy's face. Quincy ducked. Maya didn't think—she just moved.

Running full speed across the court, hair streaming behind her like a victory flag, she stretched her racket as far as it would go. THWACK. Ball hit the sweet spot. Arced perfectly over the net. Landed just inside the line.

Point for the losers.

After the game—Tyler's team won, obviously—he found her by the water fountain.

"Nice hustle back there," he said, and there was something real in his smile. Not polite. Not fake. Genuine admiration. "We should practice sometime."

Maya's hair was still a mess. Her knees were skinned. Quincy was still taking selfies with his trophy for Participation. But Maya? Maya was winning.
