Riddles on the Court
Maya's mom's old iPhone 6 buzzed in her pocket during third period. The screen was so cracked you could barely read the text: *Padel tryouts today at 4. Don't be late — Coach*
Padel. Seriously. Who even played padel? Apparently everyone at Oak Ridge High, because the new courts were ALL anyone talked about. Maya had never held a racquet in her life, but her best friend Chloe had insisted: "It's basically tennis but easier. Plus, junior varsity is where all the cute guys hang out."
The real reason Maya had signed up? Tyler Chen. He was in her AP Bio class, always drawing sphinx tattoos on his notebook instead of listening to lectures about mitochondria. Once she'd asked him about it, and he'd looked at her with those intense dark eyes and said, "Sphinxes guard secrets. They only speak to those who deserve to know the truth."
It had been the most pretentious thing she'd ever heard. She'd been obsessed ever since.
Now here she was at the courts, heart hammering against her ribs, wearing old sneakers and holding a borrowed racquet like it might explode. Coach blew the whistle. "Alright ladies, show me what you've got!"
Maya's opponent was Sarah Vasquez — literally perfect, with expensive gear and hair that stayed immaculate even when she was sweating. The ball came at Maya and she SWUNG, completely missing, spinning around like a confused ballerina. Everyone laughed. Sarah's smirk was practically audible.
But then something weird happened. Tyler sat up from the bench where he'd been watching. He caught Maya's eye and did that chin-lift thing. Not mocking. Just... acknowledging. Like he got it.
Game point. Sarah served hard. Maya's body moved before her brain could panic. She returned it low and fast. Sarah scrambled, missed. Game over. Maya had actually won.
After, Chloe found her in the locker room. "Dude! You beat Sarah Vasquez! Tyler was watching you the whole time!"
"He watches everyone, Chloe."
"Not like that." Chloe pulled something from her bag. "My mom made me bring this. She's obsessed with 'exotic post-workout snacks' now." It was a container of papaya chunks. "Try it. It's supposed to be magical for recovery or something."
Maya took a bite. "Tastes like... melon that's been forgotten in the back of the fridge for too long."
"You're so uncultured."
Her phone buzzed again. Unknown number. *Nice form out there. You play like you're solving a riddle. — TC*
Maya's stomach did that terrifying flip-flop thing. "Chloe, I think I'm gonna die."
"Good or bad die?"
"Both."
She looked at the papaya, thought about saying something dramatic about how life was messy and weird and sometimes terrible fruit was part of the journey. Instead she ate another piece and said, "Pass me another chunk. I might actually make it through tomorrow's practice if this stuff is magical."
Chloe grinned. "That's the spirit. Now tell me everything about Tyler's text."
