Riddles in the Storm
Maya's iPhone lit up with another notification – #partyoftheyear trending. Outside, actual lightning cracked across the sky like nature's photo flash, far more dramatic than any Instagram post. She adjusted her crop top for the third time, feeling like everyone else had somehow received the teenager handbook she'd missed.
The Sphinx of Lincoln High – aka Sasha, with her knowing smirk and perfectly imperfect waves – materialized beside Maya. "Having fun?"
"Totally," Maya lied, faking her best everything's-awesome vibe. Meanwhile her brain felt like scrambled eggs.
Sasha's phone buzzed. "Wanna get some air? The pressure in here's lowkey suffocating."
They ended up on the porch steps, watching the storm unleash its fury. Maya's iPhone sat ignored in her lap as lightning painted the backyard in dramatic flashes.
"So here's the thing," Sasha said suddenly. "Everyone's performing. The whole time. But you? You seem like you're actually thinking about stuff."
Maya blinked. Was that a compliment?
"Like riddles," Sasha continued. "The ancient sphinx asked impossible questions, but the point wasn't the answer – it was about being brave enough to face them. You're brave, Maya. Even if you don't see it."
Another lightning strike illuminated everything – Sasha's genuine smile, Maya's flushed cheeks, the moment feeling impossibly real.
"My Instagram's all curated perfection," Maya admitted finally. "But inside? I'm just trying to figure out who I actually am when nobody's watching."
"That's the realest thing anyone's said all night," Sasha said. "And that? That's what makes you interesting. Not the filters, not the likes. The you underneath."
Maya's iPhone remained dark as they sat there, two sphinxes in training, decoding the riddles of growing up together while lightning turned the chaotic world into something momentarily, beautifully clear.
