Riddles in the Smoothie Shop

Maya stared at the **vitamin** supplements lining the wall behind the counter at Tropical Zings, wondering why her mom insisted she take them during finals week. Working the afternoon shift meant missing the end-of-year pool party, but honestly? She'd rather blend papaya mango smoothies than watch Jake make out with yet another girl.

"Hey smoothie girl," a voice called. Maya looked up to see the new guy, Leo, leaning against the **palm** tree painted on the shop's wall like he was a model shooting a commercial. His hair was constantly messy, and he wore vintage band tees that Maya secretly admired.

"It's Maya," she said, wiping the counter. "What do you want?"

He grinned. "Bold today. I'll take a papaya blast. Extra ice."

Their banter had become a routine over the past two weeks. Leo transferred from some fancy private school, and nobody knew much about him except that he drew in a leather notebook during lunch and had this mysterious vibe that made half the sophomore class curious.

"You going to Kelsey's party?" he asked, watching her work.

Maya concentrated on blending the smoothie to perfection. "Nope. Working."

"Good," Leo said. "Me neither. Parties are like social pyramids, you know? The popular kids at the top, everyone else trying to climb up. It's exhausting."

Maya almost dropped the cup. That was exactly what she'd written in her journal last night.

"So what's your deal?" she asked, sliding his smoothie across the counter. "You're like a walking **sphinx** or something. All mysterious with those riddles you say during history class."

Leo laughed. For the first time, he looked almost nervous. "Maybe I just haven't found anyone worth solving for yet."

He held her gaze for a second too long, then took his smoothie and walked to his usual corner table. Maya felt her face heating up and busied herself restocking napkins.

Later, when her shift ended and she was counting her tips, she found a note scribbled on a receipt: *The papaya smoothie was perfect. But the conversation was better. Same time tomorrow? - L*

Maya folded the receipt carefully, thinking that maybe some things were worth solving after all.
