Riddles in the Rain
Maya pressed her face against the window, watching the **water** cascade down the glass like a living thing. Another Friday night alone while her Instagram stories showed everyone at Tyler's party. The FOMO was real, and honestly? It hurt.
She glanced at the coaxial **cable** snaking across her floor—a lifeline to the outside world, her only connection to the social universe she felt increasingly excluded from. Her phone buzzed. An unknown number.
*"I see you watching."*
Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like it was folding itself into tiny origami shapes. Someone was **spy**ing on her?
*"Who is this?"* she typed back, fingers shaking.
*"Like the riddle of the Sphinx, you have to solve me to see me."*
A **sphinx**. Riddles. What was this, some kind of game? Maya's mind raced through every person she'd ever pissed off, every crush she'd ever awkward-edited herself away from.
*"Okay, riddle me this then,"* she typed, surprising herself with sudden boldness. *"Who watches the watcher?"*
The reply came instantly: *"Someone who's been watching you watching them for three months. I'm the one who always sits behind you in bio. The one whose pencil you borrowed and never returned. The one who thinks your doodles in the margins are actually kind of amazing."*
Maya's breath caught. Leo. The quiet kid with the messy hair and the intense eyes who always seemed to be looking at something just beyond her shoulder.
*"Leo?"*
*"Meet me outside. In the rain. If you're brave enough."*
She grabbed her hoodie, heart pounding like it was trying to break out of her chest. The water from the sky was cold and perfect, blurring everything except the figure standing under the streetlight, umbrella nowhere in sight.
"Hi," Leo said, like this was the most normal thing in the world.
"You're a weird texter," Maya replied, but she was smiling.
"And you're a terrible borrow-er of pencils." He stepped closer. "I was going to wait until Monday to actually talk to you, but... the rain felt like a sign."
"From who? The universe?"
"From the great and powerful Sphinx of High School Romance," Leo said, deadpan, and Maya laughed so hard she almost forgot to be nervous.
Maybe the best nights aren't the ones everyone posts about. Maybe they're the ones that happen in the rain, with someone who finally notices you noticing them back.
