Riddles in the Pocket

sphinxiphonepapaya

Maya's fingers hovered over her iPhone screen, the familiar glow illuminating her nervous expression in the bathroom mirror. Outside, the noise of her cousin's quinceañera pulsed through the door—reggaeton bass, laughter, the clinking of glasses. She'd spent the last hour scrolling through TikTok, watching people live their best lives while she stood frozen in her too-fancy dress, feeling like an imposter in her own family's celebration.

"You hiding in here again?" Her best friend Jaz pushed open the door, holding two plates piled with fruit. "Your abuela's looking for you. Also, try this—" she thrusted a plate forward, "it's papaya with chile and lime. Trust me, it hits different."

Maya took a tentative bite. Sweet and spicy exploded on her tongue—a perfect mess of flavors, just like tonight. "Why did I agree to that speech again?"

"Because you're the favorite cousin," Jaz said, stealing Maya's iPhone and slipping it into her own purse. "And you're going out there, sphinx face and all."

"Sphinx face?"

"You know, mysterious. Enigmatic. Like you're guarding some ancient secret." Jaz grinned. "Works for you."

The DJ announced Maya's name. Her stomach did that familiar flip-flop, the one she got before every volleyball game, every presentation, every moment that mattered. She thought about all the times she'd scrolled past opportunities, letting fear win while her iPhone became her shield against the world.

The sphinx had riddles. Maya had something harder—truth.

She stepped into the crowd, her cousin's expectant face turned toward her. The room went quiet as she approached the microphone. Her hand shook slightly. She could reach for her phone, check notifications, disappear into its safe digital embrace.

Instead, Maya slipped both hands into her pockets and spoke from somewhere deeper than fear had ever reached.

"Fifteen years ago," she said, her voice stronger than she felt, "I watched my cousin become who she was always meant to be. Tonight, I'm finally learning who I am too."

The room erupted. Later, Jaz returned her iPhone, but Maya left it in her bag—some riddles you don't solve by scrolling.
