Riddles in the Heat

Elena's wrist snapped forward, the padel racket connecting with the ball in a satisfying crack that echoed off the glass walls. Sweat slicked her back, making her shirt cling like a second skin. Across the court, Marcus returned the shot with effortless precision, his movements fluid despite the humidity that pressed down on them like a physical weight.

They hadn't spoken since the merger fell through—since his silence had spoken volumes about whose side he'd chosen. Yet here they were, three months later, responding to his casual invitation like nothing had changed. Like they were still the kind of friends who met weekly, who finished each other's sentences.

Marcus wiped his forehead with the hem of his shirt, exposing a strip of pale skin above his waistband. He was like a sphinx these days—inscrutable, watching her with those dark eyes that gave away nothing. The riddles he posed now were ones she couldn't solve: Why invite her here? Why pretend things could be normal when their friendship had been collateral damage in corporate warfare?

'You're holding back,' he said, bouncing the ball between his palms.

Elena laughed bitterly. 'Says the man who perfected the art of saying nothing.' She reached for her water bottle, the plastic warm from the court's heat. The liquid was barely cool anymore, but she drank anyway, swallowing past the lump in her throat. 'Why are we doing this, Marcus?'

He served instead of answering. The ball slammed into the corner, impossible to return. Elena didn't try.

'Because I miss you,' he said softly when the ball stopped rolling. 'Because I made a mistake, and I don't know how to fix it.'

The glass walls of the padel court reflected them both—two separate figures in an enclosed space, trapped together by choice and circumstance. Outside, the world continued without them. Inside, something cracked open.

Elena set down her racket. 'Try starting with the truth.'
