Riddles in the Hallways

Maya's iphone screen glowed in the dark of her bedroom, illuminating the anonymous message that had just appeared: "Everyone wears masks. The trick is knowing which one is actually you."

She'd been receiving these cryptic texts from someone calling themselves "Sphinx" for three weeks. At first, she'd thought it was a prank. But the messages kept coming, each one like a riddle she couldn't quite solve but couldn't stop thinking about either.

Freshman year was supposed to be this big coming-of-age moment, but mostly Maya just felt invisible. Until the day she caught Jason—the guy she'd been low-key spying on through his instagram stories—getting cornered by Marcus in the hallway.

Marcus was your classic high school bull, all swagger and zero substance. He had Jason backed against a row of lockers, and something in Maya just snapped.

"Hey!" she called out, her voice cracking. "Principal Hensley is looking for you."

Marcus hesitated, then scoffed and walked away. Jason let out a breath he'd been holding.

"Thanks," he said, actually meeting her eyes. "That was... pretty brave."

Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket. When she checked it later, Sphinx had sent one final message: "The riddle wasn't about the mask you show others. It was about finding the courage to take it off."

She never found out who Sphinx was. But somehow, those anonymous texts had given her something more valuable than answers: the courage to stop being a spy in her own life and actually start living it.
