Riddles in the Deep

I cut through the water at midnight, my strokes precise and rhythmic. The pool lights cast rippling shadows across the bottom, and in that distorted underwater world, I can almost forget everything I learned tonight.

Almost.

How long had he been watching me? The man I'd spent three years building a life with—turning out to be someone else entirely. A corporate spy, passing along my research to competitors. The pieces slot into place with awful clarity: his questions about my work, his insistence on "casual" dinners with my colleagues, his strange discomfort whenever I mentioned specific projects.

I surface, gasping. Lightning splits the sky above, illuminating the pool deck for a heartbeat. In that flash, I see him standing there, watching me. The truth hits like a physical blow—all this time, I'd been swimming with a predator in the water, and I'd never even noticed.

"You always were like a sphinx to me," he'd said once, with that practiced tenderness that now makes my skin crawl. "So full of secrets." The irony is suffocating. He was the one hiding everything.

I dive again, letting the water muffle my thoughts. But they keep coming: the surveillance footage from my office, the emails I'd accessed on his laptop, the realization that our entire relationship had been a professional assignment for him.

The surface seems so far away. I could stay down here forever. But then—another lightning flash, and through the water's distortion, I see something on the pool deck. His phone.

He's leaving. And I have choices to make.

I break the surface, water streaming from my face, and pull myself onto the concrete just as the thunder catches up with the light. In the storm's aftermath, I find my phone and type a single message to my department head. Then another to a lawyer.

The sphinx has spoken. Now let's see who solves the riddle.
