Riddles in the Chlorine
Maya stood by the snack table, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The **baseball** team from school had taken over the deep end, their shouts and splashes filling Jake's backyard with chaotic energy. She didn't belong here, and everyone knew it.
That's when she noticed her – perched on the diving board like she owned it, dark hair slicked back, unreadable expression fixed on the water. Raven. The girl everyone called **sphinx** because you could never tell what she was thinking. Maya had been crushing on her since chemistry last year, but they'd never spoken.
"You're not gonna swim?" The voice came from behind her. Jake's cousin, Leo, holding a plate of **papaya** chunks like they were some kind of exotic treasure. "My mom literally went to three different stores for this. Nobody's eating it."
Maya laughed, surprising herself. "That's because it looks like alien fruit."
"Exactly." Leo popped a piece in his mouth. "Wanna try? It's actually pretty good. Not gonna lie, I was scared too."
Their fingers brushed as she reached for a piece. The papaya was sweet, unexpected – nothing like the processed snacks at every other party she'd been dragged to.
"So," Leo said, "you gonna talk to Sphinx all night, or you actually gonna say something?"
Maya almost choked. "I'm not – I was just –"
"She's been watching you, you know. Since you got here." Leo grinned. "She hates baseball too. That's why she's up there instead of down there."
**Water** rippled as someone cannonballed into the pool, sending waves crashing against the sides. Maya's heart was doing something similar.
"Go." Leo nudged her shoulder. "I'll cover for you if you need to make a dramatic exit."
Maya walked to the diving board, each step feeling heavier than the last. Raven didn't look away, didn't smile, just watched with that infuriatingly calm expression.
"Hey," Maya said, sounding breathless. "Nice party."
Raven's lips curved slightly. "It's a disaster. Jake's uncle already broke a lawn chair."
"Yeah, I saw."
Silence. But not the uncomfortable kind.
"You want the rest of this papaya?" Maya held out her cup. "It's actually... not terrible."
Raven's eyebrow raised. Just a fraction. "You tried it?"
"Leo made me."
"Hmph." Raven slid off the diving board, landing beside her. "Show me where it is."
