Riddles in the Chlorinated Dark

The pool was empty at 6 AM, just as Elena preferred. She'd been swimming laps every morning for three months, ever since Marcus left, seeking the rhythmic repetition of stroke-breathe-stroke to quiet her mind. The water was her only true friend now—uncomplicated, holding her weight without judgment, washing away the salt of tears she refused to cry elsewhere.

Today, something broke the pattern. A woman sat on the pool deck, wearing an oversized sun hat that seemed ridiculous indoors, her legs crossed elegantly as she watched Elena cut through the water. Elena recognized her immediately—Sarah, Marcus's sister, the one person who'd warned her about him.

"You look like a sphinx," Elena said, pulling herself from the water, dripping and breathless. "Perched up there, waiting to ask me riddles I can't answer."

Sarah's laugh was hollow. "The riddle's why you're still swimming in circles, Elena. He's gone. He moved to Seattle two weeks ago. Didn't you know?"

The chlorinated air suddenly felt suffocating. Elena had been swimming through her grief while Marcus had simply... left it behind. Sarah removed her hat, revealing dark circles under her eyes. "He sent me to give you this." She held out a small box. "He said you'd understand."

Inside was a silver locket Elena had given him three years ago, the day she'd chosen him over her career, over herself.

"Some riddle," Elena said, her voice steady. "The answer is that I was the only one drowning."

She dove back into the water, leaving Sarah alone with her hat and her brother's cowardice, finally understanding that some friendships survive only as long as you refuse to ask the questions that would destroy them.
