Riddles by the Pool

Maya's palms were sweating so much she was practically leaving puddles everywhere. Sixteen and she'd finally scored an invite to Jasmine's legendary summer blowout, but now she was hiding in the bathroom, psyching herself up to walk outside like a normal human being who definitely belonged here.

The backyard looked like something out of a teen movie — fairy lights strung across the **palm** trees, Bluetooth speakers bumping Doja Cat, and that ridiculous **pool** with the built-in waterfall that everyone pretended wasn't try-hard. Maya grabbed an **orange** soda from the cooler and tried to look casual, the condensation slick against her fingers.

"Hey! You made it!" It was Leo, her lab partner from AP Bio, looking unfairly good in swim trunks. "Come sit. We're playing truth-or-dare but like, elevated version."

"Elevated?" Maya raised an eyebrow as she settled onto the lawn chair next to him.

"Jasmine calls it Sphinx Rules," Leo explained, pointing at where Jasmine sat cross-legged on her pool float, looking like she owned everything. "She's the **Sphinx** tonight. You have to answer her riddle truthfully or do the dare. No escapes."

Great. Social anxiety's worst nightmare.

"Okay, new victim," Jasmine announced, her eyes locking onto Maya. Everyone turned. Maya felt her face burning. "Here's your riddle: What's the one thing you want everyone to think about you, but nobody actually knows?"

The backyard went silent. Even the music seemed to drop. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. This wasn't just a game — this was social warfare, Jasmine style. Probably expecting her to crumble or say something basic.

But then Leo squeezed her shoulder, just barely, and something in Maya shifted.

"That I've got my life figured out," she said, her voice steady. "When actually I'm lowkey terrified I'm messing everything up." She took a sip of her orange soda. "Also, I hate your float, Jasmine. It's giving major try-hard energy."

Everyone stared for approximately three seconds.

Then Jasmine threw her head back and cackled. "Finally! Someone with actual spice." She splashed water at Maya. "You're good. Welcome to the inner circle."

Leo grinned. "Told you you'd kill it."

Maya's palms weren't sweating anymore. Sometimes the scariest moments turned out to be the ones that changed everything.
