Riddles at the Water's Edge

The corporate retreat had been Elena's idea—something about team bonding and fresh perspectives. Now she stood by the infinity pool at sunset, watching her colleagues scatter like marbles across the resort. The water reflected the burning sky in fractured oranges and pinks, beautiful and completely dishonest.

"You look like you're solving the riddle of the Sphinx," Marcus said, appearing beside her with two drinks.

She accepted one. "If the Sphinx asked me what walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening, I'd say: someone who hasn't slept since the acquisition."

Marcus laughed, but it was gentle. He'd been with the company twelve years. She'd been there six months and already understood why everyone called him the Sphinx behind his back—not because he was mysterious, but because he survived by saying nothing at all.

"Padel tournament tomorrow," he said. "You playing?"

"I don't play."

"Neither do half of them. That's not the point."

She looked at him really looked. The lines around his eyes, the way his shoulders stayed perpetually relaxed despite carrying three departments worth of problems.

"What is the point, Marcus?"

He considered his drink. "The point is that for one hour, everyone gets to hit something as hard as they can and nobody calls a meeting about it."

Something in her chest loosened. "Tomorrow morning."

"I'll save you a partner."

The pool's surface shattered as someone dove in, the sound rippling outward like an afterthought. Elena watched the water smooth itself over, erasing all evidence of disturbance, and wondered how much of her life had been spent doing exactly that—making the surface look perfect while underneath, she was still learning how to swim.
