Riddles at the Resort

Elena pressed her palm against the cool glass of the balcony door, watching Marcus dominate the padel court below. His aggressive returns sent the ball ricocheting off the walls, each strike echoing her own mounting frustration. Three days into what was supposed to be their anniversary trip, and he'd spent more time with his colleagues than with her.

The invitation had been explicit: 'Join us for the corporate retreat!' she'd pleaded, imagining sunset dinners and重新connection. Instead, Marcus had transformed into his workplace persona—charging through meetings like a bull in a china shop, consuming attention and leaving no room for subtlety or intimacy.

She'd sat by the pool yesterday, nursing a drink and watching executives' spouses form their own careful alliances. The water's artificial blue seemed to mock the authenticity she craved. That's when she'd met Richard, the company's crisis manager, who'd leaned against the Sphinx statue near the cabana bar and spoken in riddles about marriages that survive corporate ambition.

'Either you're partners in the crime,' he'd said, 'or you're the victim.'

Now, as Marcus laughed with his boss on the court, Elena realized the riddle wasn't about survival at all. The padel game ended, Marcus looking up at their suite, expecting her applause. She didn't wave. Instead, she packed her suitcase, leaving her palm print on the balcony glass—a temporary mark, like their marriage, destined to fade.
