Riddles at the Pool

poolfoxspysphinx

The chlorine stung Maya's eyes as she floated on her back in the community **pool**, letting the water muffle the sounds of the party above. Somewhere on the deck, Liam's laughter rang out—that perfect, effortless laugh that made everything seem easy. Maya ducked underwater, holding her breath until her lungs burned. This was fine. Totally fine. She was just the quiet girl who read too much mythology books while everyone else played their social games with perfect grace.

When she surfaced, Jess was at the edge, doing her best **fox** impression—hair tossed, chin lifted, watching Liam with practiced calculation. "You're playing it all wrong," Jess had told her earlier. "You've got to make him chase you, Maya. Be mysterious."

But Maya didn't know how to be mysterious. She only knew how to watch, to notice things. Like how Liam's smile never quite reached his eyes when his friends made their jokes. Like how he kept checking his phone, fingers tapping out messages he immediately deleted. Like how he slipped away from the party every twenty minutes, disappearing behind the pool house.

The third time he vanished, Maya followed.

She crept around the corner of the pool house, feeling ridiculous—like a terrible **spy** in some bad teen movie. But then she saw him, sitting on the concrete edge, phone pressed to his ear, voice cracking as he spoke. "I don't know, Mom. I just—I don't fit here. Everyone expects me to be this person I'm not."

Maya froze. All this time, she'd thought Liam was one of them—the confident, effortless popular kids. But he was just as lost as she was.

The **sphinx** in her mythology books had guarded its secrets with riddles. Teenagers guarded theirs with smiles that didn't reach their eyes. Suddenly, Liam's mystery wasn't something to solve from afar. It was something to share.

Maya stepped forward, and when Liam looked up, startled, she didn't retreat. She just sat beside him on the concrete and said, "The riddles get easier when you have someone to help you solve them."
