Riddles at the Padel Court

padelsphinxzombie

Marcus dragged himself across the padel court, sweat dripping into his eyes at 7 AM. Another corporate retreat—another day of forced camaraderie with colleagues who'd voted to lay off half his department last quarter. He felt like a zombie, hollowed out by three years of incremental betrayals and strategic realignments that never quite aligned with his actual life.

Across the net stood Elena, the division's new chief strategy officer. She moved with predatory grace, her paddle slicing through the humid air like a weapon. They called her the Sphinx behind her back—not for her wisdom, but for her love of impossible questions in meetings that left everyone paralyzed. "What's our north star?" she'd ask, while Marcus calculated mortgage payments and his daughter's braces in his head.

"You're not here to win," Elena said, slamming the ball past him. "You're here to be present."

The ball rebounded off the glass wall, mocking them both. Marcus had heard the rumors—Elena was being groomed for VP. She ate zombies like him for breakfast, commodified their suffering into quarterly targets, slept soundly while he lay awake wondering if loyalty was just another word for slow death.

"What's the riddle, Elena?" he asked, finally making contact with the ball. "What do you want from us?"

She caught the ball on her paddle, holding it there like an offering. "Same thing you want. To wake up."

For a moment, Marcus saw the exhaustion behind her carefully curated armor. The corporate zombie wasn't him—it was both of them, trapped in a game where winning still meant losing something essential.

"Play again tomorrow?" she asked, not quite meeting his eyes.

Marcus nodded. Maybe the Sphinx's riddle wasn't something you solved alone.
