Riddles at the Deep End

Maya's fingers hovered over her iPhone screen, doom-scrolling through the pool party invite list like it was a ancient prophecy of her social doom. The Hendersons' annual summer bash. The crowned jewel of the social pyramid. And somehow, she'd actually been invited.

She stood by the chain-link fence, chlorine heavy in the humidity-thick air, suddenly hyperaware of her hair. It was doing that thing where the curls frizzed into oblivion the second she stepped outside. God, why couldn't she just have normal hair like the other girls?

The pool stretched before her like a glittering social minefield. The popular clique – pyramid royalty – lounged on pool floats, their phones perfectly dry on nearby tables. Maya clutched her own phone like a lifeline. Maybe she could fake an emergency. Maybe she could—

"You're going to drop that in the water."

Maya jumped. A girl sat on the edge of the pool, legs submerged, dark hair slicked back like a seal. She looked like one of those mysterious transfer students who appeared mid-semester and disappeared just as mysteriously. Like a sphinx without the riddles. Or with them, apparently.

"What?"

"Your phone." The girl nodded at Maya's white-knuckled grip. "You're gripping it so hard your hand's shaking. It's going in the pool, and then goodbye iPhone, hello social isolation."

Maya nearly did drop it. "I... I was just leaving."

"Why?" The girl tilted her head, genuinely curious. "Because they're over there being themselves, and you're over here being... what?"

"Not them?" The words slipped out before Maya could stop them.

The stranger laughed, surprising and bright. "Okay, sphinx mode time: What walks on two legs, hates their own hair, and stands at the edge of everything?"

Maya blinked. "I don't..."

"You, three seconds ago." The girl splashed water toward her. "I'm Zara. Come sit down. Your hair's fine, by the way. The curls are actually kind of amazing."

Something shifted in Maya's chest. Not everything – she was still anxious, still standing at the edge of the pool while the popular group held court on their inflatable thrones. But the pyramid suddenly seemed less like a wall and more like... just people being people.

"My hair's a disaster," Maya muttered, but she sat down anyway, dangling her feet in the cool water.

"It's not a disaster. It's just doing something different than everyone else's." Zara's phone sat abandoned on a bench. "You know what's actually a disaster? Spending your whole life watching it through a screen."

Maya looked at her iPhone, then at Zara, then at the impossible blue of the pool. She set the phone on the concrete beside her.

"Hey, Zara?"

"Yeah?"

"What's your riddle?"

Zara grinned, and Maya realized the sphinx comparison wasn't about riddles at all. It was about transformation. About shedding old skins. About becoming something new in the heat of something real.

"What floats on water, holds all the world's knowledge, and weighs absolutely nothing?"

Maya laughed, and this time she actually dove in. "I have no idea. But I think I'm ready to find out."
