Riddles at the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her solo cup like it was a lifeline. The water churned with bodies—everyone swimming except her. Her first high school party, and she was already hovering at the margins.

"You gonna stand there all night looking like a sphinx?" her older brother jaime called out, doing a cannonball that splashed half the party. Maya flipped him off, but the knot in her stomach tightened.

She'd been crushing on Alex since freshman year. He was by the snack table, laughing with his friends, golden hair catching the light like something from a movie. A total golden boy, while Maya felt like a goldfish in a too-small bowl—swimming in circles, going nowhere.

Then Alex looked at her. Actually looked at her.

He crossed the patio, and Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. But when he got close, she saw it: a piece of spinach wedged between his front teeth, bright green and undeniable. The sheer absurdity of it—this perfect moment, ruined by salad debris.

"Hey," he said. "You're Jaime's sister, right? Maya?"

"Yeah," she managed. "Hi."

"Cool party." He leaned in like he was sharing a secret. "Your brother's full of bull, by the way. Told me you hated swimming, but I've seen you at practice. You're fast."

Maya blinked. The crush who'd never spoken to her knew who she was? Knew she was on swim team?

"He said that?" she asked, bewildered.

"Yeah. Think he was trying to keep me away from you." Alex grinned, spinach and all. "So. You gonna show everyone how it's done, or what?"

Something shifted. The apprehension unspooled, replaced by something like certainty. Maya set down her cup, kicked off her sandals.

"Watch this," she said.

The dive was perfect. The water was cool against her skin, clean and freeing. When she broke the surface, gasping, Alex was cheering loudest of all. And maybe high school was just a series of small humiliations and unexpected connections. Maybe the riddles weren't supposed to be solved.

Maybe you just had to dive in anyway.
