Riddles at the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the pool clutching her spinach smoothie like it was a lifeline. The green sludge was supposed to be her "summer glow-up" fuel—whatever that meant—but mostly it just tasted like lawn clippings and desperation.

"You coming in or what?" Tyler called from the water, droplets running down his stupid perfect abs. Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to anatomy.

"Yeah, just, uh, finishing this," she lied. The smoothie was already gone. She'd been nursing it for twenty minutes like a freshman at their first party.

Across the pool, Lena sat on the edge, legs dangling in the water. Lena was the sphinx of Northwood High—mysterious, unreadable, impossibly cool. She moved through social situations like she knew something nobody else did. Maya had been watching her all year, trying to decode the riddle of Lena Hart.

"Hey," Lena said, suddenly beside Maya. "You're overthinking it."

Maya jumped. "What?"

"The swimming thing. You've been standing there for actual hours." Lena's eyes crinkled. "It's just water. We're all gonna look like prunes anyway."

"I'm not—" Maya started, then sighed. "Okay, yeah. Maybe I'm nervous."

"About what?" Lena tilted her head. "You're gorgeous. And that smoothie was honestly brave. I saw you drinking it. Respect."

Maya laughed despite herself. "It was disgusting."

"Probably." Lena stood up. "Come on. I'll go in with you. We'll make a scene."

They jumped together, screaming, creating a splash that definitely annoyed everyone. But as Maya surfaced, gasping and laughing, she caught Tyler smiling at her. And somehow, the sphinx's riddle had solved itself: the cool kids weren't untouchable mysteries. They were just people, swimming through the same awkward waters, pretending their own spinach smoothies weren't gross.
